Canada and Mexico Lift Retaliatory Tariffs

On May 20, 2019, both Mexico and Canada and lifted the countermeasures they had imposed on imports from the United States in June and July 2018, respectively, following the imposition of Section 232 tariffs on imports of steel and aluminum, reverting back to agreed-upon NAFTA tariff levels. Volume 1 of the USDEC Export Guide has been updated to reflect the following changes:

Canada: In-quota imports of yogurt of 0403.10 are 0% within Canada's global quota under NAFTA

Mexico: NAFTA imports of the following cheese lines are duty-free:

  • 0406.10.01 - Fresh (unripened or uncured) cheese, including whey cheese, and curd 0406.20.01 - Grated or powdered cheese, of all kinds
  • 0406.90.04 - Grana or Parmegiano-reggiano, with a fatty matter content, by weight, less than or equal to 40%, with a water content by weight, in the non-fat matter, less than or equal to 47%;  Danbo, Edam, Fontal, Fontina, Fynbo, Gouda, Havarti, Maribo, Samsoe, Esrom, Itálico, Kernhem, Saint-Nectaire, Saint-Paulin o Taleggio, with fatty matter content, by weight, less than or equal to 40%, with a content by weight of water, in the non-fat matter, greater than 47% but not exceeding 72%
  • 0406.90.99 - Other

All imports of dairy products into Mexico are now duty-free and quota-free under NAFTA.
