USDEC Seeks Member Feedback on EU Packaging Proposals
The European Commission has put forward several packaging proposals, and USDEC is seeking member feedback by August 8, 2023 on the expected impact of these regulations on your exports so that we may represent your concerns as these regulations are developed.
Proposed requirements include:
- Ban on Bisphenol A (BPA) in all food contact materials by late 2025/early 2026;
- Ban on the intentional use of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) on paper and cardboard food packaging materials. The planned enforcement date is not clearly identified.
- Recyclable packaging, use of recycled content, and re-use requirements for packaging under the proposed Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR). Requirements will apply to all packaging entering the EU, including food packaging and transport packaging (i.e. bulk packaging, pallets, straps for securing cargo, etc.).
Members are asked to complete this packaging survey by August 8. Responses to this survey will be treated as confidential. USDEC will only share aggregated member feedback with the U.S. government to inform strategy going forward.
